Introduction: Childhood obesity has emerged as a critical public health concern, with its prevalence rising steadily across the globe. This alarming trend poses significant challenges to the health and well-being of children, as well as to healthcare systems and societies at large. Understanding the complex interplay of factors contributing to its development is crucial for effective prevention and intervention efforts. This review aims to explore the childhood obesity's etiology and its Consequential Health Effects. Methods: The present study is a review study designed in 2024. Relevant findings were reviewed in international and national databases. The search strategy included keywords related to the study. The most relevant articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, were reviewed. Results: Childhood obesity is a multifaceted condition influenced by genetic, behavioral, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. Behavioral factors such as sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy dietary habits play a significant role, exacerbated by environmental factors such as the easy availability of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods and the proliferation of screen-based entertainment. Socioeconomic disparities further compound the issue, with children from low-income families disproportionately affected by obesity due to limited access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity. Furthermore, childhood obesity is associated with a wide range of adverse health outcomes, both in the short and long term. Physically, obese children are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, respiratory problems, and orthopedic issues. Psychologically, they may experience low self-esteem, depression, eating disorders, and social stigmatization. Moreover, childhood obesity often tracks into adulthood, leading to a higher risk of obesity-related comorbidities and premature mortality. Conclusion: The etiology of childhood obesity is complex, involving a combination of genetic, behavioral, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. Its adverse health consequences underscore the urgent need for comprehensive preventive strategies and policies. By addressing the root causes of obesity and fostering supportive environments conducive to healthy living, we can mitigate its impact on the health and well-being of children worldwide.
